Lance iniziò la sua carriera sportiva come atleta di triathlon e tra il 1987 ed il 1988 era il miglior texano tra gli Under 19. Il secondo classificato di quelle competizoni, Chann McRae, divenne poi suo compagno di squadra nella carriera ciclistica. Armstrong vinse il titolo nazionale di triathlon nel 1989 e nel 1990, ma iniziò a mostrare la sua forza ciclistica quando nel 1991 vinse il titolo amatoriale statunitense. Esordì da professionista nel 1992 chiudendo 14° alle Olimpiadi di Barcellona e ottenne nello stesso anno la sua prima vittoria: una tappa al Giro della Galizia. L’anno dopo divenne prima campione nazionale a Filadelfia, poi vinse il Trofeo Laigueglia. L’11 luglio 1993 vinse l’ottava tappa del Tour de France, la Châlons-sur-Marne-Verdun, diventando il più giovane vincitore di tappa nella competizione nel dopoguerra. Tuttavia non conclude la corsa, ritirandosi dopo l’undicesima tappa. A sorpresa in autunno si laureò campione del mondo, vincendo a Oslo, sotto una pioggia battente, in una gara condizionata da molte cadute. In questo periodo ha vissuto a Como. Nell’edizione del 1995 della corsa francese, un compagno di squadra di Lance, Fabio Casartelli, muore durante la 15esima tappa, dopo aver battuto violentemente la testa a seguito di una caduta in discesa.
